Question:

How long til liquid clears your stomach?

If I were to drink an 8 oz. glass of water very quickly, how long would it take for that water to leave the stomach?

Note, I am not asking how long it would be before you eliminate (pee) the water from your body. I want to know how long the 8 oz. of water is pooled in your stomach to dilute something which could be harmful to the lining of your stomach, like say for instance, ibuprofen.

  1. In anesthesia, we give 2 hours for water, but that's probably longer than it takes most people to empty.

Sometimes, though, we put a tube into the stomach after putting people to sleep and find all kinds of stuff in there, even in people who have been without food for more than 8 hours.

As far as your ibuprofen goes, an hour is pretty likely, but your mileage may vary (every person is different, and the same person may have different emptying time depending on what's happening)

  2. There is some degree of controversy about how quickly gastric emptying occurs, and clearly the rate of gastric emptying with a primarily liquid meal will be faster; in a healthy patient, about 90% of the liquid meal will empty within 60 minutes (based on scintigraphic assesment).  A primarily solid meal has a completely different curve and to reach the same level of gastric emptying takes significantly longer.  I honestly don't know the rate of emtying for 8 fl. oz. of water, per se.

Perhaps the citation below will be of further assistance in answering your question more specifically.

    Best of luck.
