How long to become a grandmaster at chess?

i have a friend who just started to play chess and he's REALLY into it. he is 40 years old and would like to become a grandmaster within the next 5 years. Anyone think it's possible? why or why not?

  1. I doubt it. The youngest grandmaster in the world was like 12.  This is a huge accomplishment, and when you are older it is harder. It's not only your work ethic, older people have jobs and a life, but also the ability of your mind to change and understand chess and all it's complexities,which is easier for the constantly changing mind of an adolescent.  A more practical goal would be becoming a master in 5-10yrs.
