How long to charge a new cellphone?

I just got a new cellphone, and I was wondering how long I need to leave it charging. I heard from a friend that I should let it fully charge before turning it on, others told me at least 12 hours.

The phone has been charging for about 3 hours now, and it is fully charged. (light turns green when fully charged).

I just wanna make sure I don't have a bad battery life.

you dont, but some battery's want a real max charge, and overnite is the best/ You book will tell you if thats required.

3 hours is little too much, for a new phone, which usually last about 45 mins to fully charged..
