How long to get a promotion through the railroad?

My husband has applied for a few positions for the railroad. Once he has gone through training, how long on average before you get promoted to conductor or engineer?

I wouldn't leave anyone with less than 5 years unattended in my garage.

With Union Pacific (I'm not sure about the others), the training and classes take 12 weeks, and after that time, the students are promoted to conductor.  But if they are sent to remote control training, that could take up to another 2-3 months, but that will be after being promoted to conductor, so the person will be paid full wages.  Engineers all come from the ranks of conductors, and conductors can bid on engineer school as soon as about one year of being a conductor, and the slots are awarded by seniority.
