In adoption cases how long does a birth mother have before reclaiming her child? During an adoption process before it has gone to court after being filed how hard would it be for a birth mother to take back her child?

  1. There was a chart on the origins usa website.  The laws vary from irrevocable instantly, to much longer periods of time depending on location and/or how the adoption is being facilitated.

Laws *might* have changed since this chart was made though.

Edit to add:  Notice when you look at this chart, states that have lengthy time periods require more than just the reason of changing one's mind.  Something must have gone terribly wrong ethically with the adoption in these cases.

  2. It may vary from country to country, and, assuming you're in the USA, it may vary from state to state.  In Ohio, I believe you have up to a year.  I had friends who adopted children, and they said they were on pins & needles until a  year had passed.  Someone can correct me if it has changed, or if I am incorrect.

  3. l think it's about 3 months, but l'm not sure.  lt seems kind of unfair if it's any longer than that though, surely it would be really upsetting to the child and the parents for the child to be taken away a year later?!
