How long until cars become extinct?

Question

When will a new invention come along? I am not talking about subways, trains, airplanes...I mean individually owned vehicles not dependant on gas as fuel. What will happen to our roadways!? They setup of out cities/towns are dependant on car and trucks. Think of what will happen to all the gas stations, Shucks/Napa/other auto parts stores, parking lots, highways, etc. Thoughts? Predections?

good question. I honestly think they have already come up with an alternative means to cars, but trying to do the conversion is going to be difficult. I really think someday it will be like what you see on Back to the Future and the Fifth Element. There will still be auto stores...just more futuristic like parts for aircraft cars or something of the sort. Take for example how much more futuristic cars are looking now. When I first started driving cars were like old style cavaliers or ford tempos...now they are getting more aero-dynamic like a brand new corvette...the body style is starting to reflect more futuristic types. Then again if you think about this....we are polluting the earth so much that maybe we will go south...ya into the ground to live and dwell like ants. It's going to be interesting to see. I prob. won't be alive to see it, but it will be something unimaginable I bet. Then again maybe an asteroid will come and wipe us all out or something like in the movie I am Legend and we will never know. But yes I think the gas car will be gone soon. My prediction...2040 it's a totally different earth than what we now know it as being now.

Manufactured things do not become extinct, they become redundant, in the case of the car, there is no sign of this in sight.

Cars will become extinct if there are modern scientists and engineers that will invent technological and new improved transportationary things (such as jet packs). For me, new invention will come along when there are many modern scientists and engineers.

Actually, if the new invention came, not all cars will not be used, only some, such as tricycles. Also, if the new invention came, the previous gas stations should now be improved.

They may change, but they will still be cars.  They may be powered by multiple fuels or just very different fuels, but they will still be cars.  We may not have air tires, but they well still have wheels.  Hovering, flying, will always take more energy than rolling.

Even the hybrid car bubble is going to pop when people see the car is a throw away once the batteries need to be replaced.  This will kill the resale and impact new car sales if they don't get the battery prices down.
