I have had my 3 month old lovebird for about 9 days now. She chirps when she is in her cage but freaks out when I open the door to change her water or put my finger out to hold her. She is tame. Her previous owner held her all the time. How long till she will let me do he same?

  1. You should use a small towel and pick up your bird and hold it for at least 15 minutes several times a day. Talk to it and pet it, it will soon find that you are not to be feared and warm up to you.

  2. What have you done to establish a bond with the bird? At the very least you should be sitting outside her cage and talking to her for a minimum of 1 to 2 hours every day.. If you are not doing this then she has no idea what your intentions are.

How would you react if a 900 foot tall lovebird  walked up to your house and shoved its beak into the front door? My bet is that you would "Freak out."

Spend some time every day just talking to her. eventually she will show interest in you and start comimg to the front of the cage when you sit down there. When she shows real interest in you then try giving some treats through the bars. When she is comfortable;e taking treats from your hand, then open the cage door and offer the treat at the door. Let her come to you! Eventually she will come to the door to take the treats. Then you can put your other hand out to her with the index finger extended while you say "Step Up" in a commanding tone. She should soon get the idea and climb onto your hand.

You have now gained here trust, and can now go on to other training.

    Good luck

  3. It will take a while for her to get used to you. It took mine a months and a half to even let me pet her, but now I can hold her all I want to. With lovebirds it takes a bit longer sense they are more stubborn then other birds LOL! But once she decides you are ok to love, then that will be it for you both LOL! I know mine has to be in the room with me come daylight LOL!

  4. it just take time. what might help is if you hand feed her some millet. birds love their millet and it helped tame my parrotlet. he wasn't hand fed so he wasn't tame and now he loves me (like literally) people say that he's my husband!! so just spend time with her  and talk to her and try the millet trick. just leave it on the stick and hold it in the cage and wait for her to come over. hav fun bonding^.^
