I just bought a teddy bear hamster today, and I think I read somewhere that you need to wait like two days before holding them, and I was wondering if this was true

  1. Nope not usually, unless you buy an older hamster. Whenever I get a new pet from a pet store I hold it right out of the box so it can get used to me. Talk softly to your hamster and make sure you don't grab it from above. Put your hand down next to it and then scoop it up or let it walk onto your hand. If it's shy, come with a tasty treat (some sort of vegetable or fruit, or those treat pretzel thingies, mine love those) and let it eat from your hand so it gets used to you.

  2. when i got mine the pet store told me ro let it sit for a few days and for the first few hours i wasnt petting him or noting but then i went in and picked him up and he was fine didnt bite or nothing

  3. No, not entirely true, probably right along some lines. I have a short haired syranian hamster, and I held her softly. Chino has never bitten anybody so you should be fine. Speak softly to you're new addition and feed her/him some fresh food and leave her in the cage to adjust to her new home. Do that for a couple of days to let her settle in.

    Good luck!

TIP- Wash you're hands every time before holding her to get her to regonize you're scent. Also never eat then pick up you're hamster. They don't have very good eyesight, so you're finger may be a tasty tidbit to them.

  4. no i got my hamster the first day that i bought it of course my hamster has never bitten me before but they say that so they could get comfortable to the new cage but you could hold it but very gently and pet it very gently too and you should give it a snack while you are holding it so it knows you are its friend and you are nice

  5. i let mine settle in for two days. on the night of the second, stick your hand in and let him check it out. you will have to tame him in order to hold him. just stick your hand in every day for a couple of minutes. after another day or two, start putting food and treats in your palm and let him come on it and explore it. be patient. taming will take around a week or two depending on the hamster. don't be afraid if he bites you, if you want to tame him, let him know that your not going to hurt him or take his food. like i said to everyone else, bites are very temperary and mild pain is good.
