How long will I have to wait to reenter the Schengen countries without a visa after my first 90 days there?

As a US citizen I can stay 90 days in the Schengen countries without needing a visa. After 90 days, can I go to any non-Schengen country and then simply return to the Schengen countries for another 90 days of visa-less travel? Or do I have to leave the Schengen countries for a specific number of days before I can reenter?

A Schengen visa is 90 days max in any 180 days, so no you cannot just leave the Schengen area for a couple of days and re-apply

Firstly you would have to apply to an embassy in your home country, and secondly you would have to wait 90 days before re-applying again
