How long will a Hobo stove last made out of a pepsi can?

I know the aluminum will become brittle after heating and I just wonder how long it takes before it really disintegrates.

Is it better to use a paint can ?, and where do you think I can find the best design ? .

  1. I used a pepsi can stove on my thruhike of the AT last summer. I used it twice a day for 5 months and it is still in gnreat shape. There are no signs of it disintegrating or coming apart. It took a beating and I still plan on using it for years to come. Unfortunately the site that hosted the directions is no longer online.

  2. I have had alot of pepsi can stoves and they are THE S**T!! That is the best cooking system I have ever used. Couple them with ultralight dehydrated food and reflective heating bags/pots, the work amazingly. I have had and made plenty, but have only really used the first one I bought extensively. It is 3 years old and it is still as good as new. Try Googling for plans, I cant remember the site I found mine on. IJust looked for it bat I cant remember name...

  3. I found that the windscreen that you get from army surplus, works great with my pop stove.  The type I'm using nestles onto the outside of the canteen cup with the folding handle.

  4. The people have been know to use a Pepsi can stove to backpack the Appalachian Trail and the Pacific crest trail so as long as it doesn't get crushed it should last quite a while. As far as designs go here is a good website that offers a variety even ones made out out of cat food cans.

Youtube has some good how to videos also.

  5. Until you step on it. I use a modified version of the Pepsi can stove made out of slightly thicker beer cans and I can stand on it. It's rock solid. You can find some examples on these websites: http://www.minibulldesign.com/fs2.htm

  6. Pepsi cans are designed to contain a cold, carbonated liquid, my friend. I give them ONE camp night.

Steel pipes are much better. Paint cans suck.

However, I have found that a small ceramic furnace, built of rocks with an oxygen feed hole that tunnels underneath, can be useful for warming soup, coffee, or smelting steel.

I have known Dutch sailors, who always believed that the best fire should be contained within walls of thick metal construction, in order to protect the wood of their ships.

    To each his own.

Watch out for the newspaper which lines the bottom of the birdcage...I understand it's very flammable...
