Do not tell me to get a larger tank. or that a larger tank is more suitable. because all I am able to do right now is the one gallon.

Actually this is already an upgrade for them.

it used to be 3 goldfish for 3/4 of a gallon

now its one goldfish per gallon.

  1. if all you have is a 1 gallon then return the fish.. simple as that

would you get a dog knowing ytou couldn't feed or house it properly?

then why would you a fish?

  2. not very long its not enough room for them to grow, i had two in a five gallon tank and then i moved them to a twenty gallon tank and they grew some more

  3. With daily partial (one half gallon) water changes you should be able to keep the fish for a few weeks or maybe a few months but that would be cruel to keep it any longer than that. It would be better for yo to take the goldfish back to the pet shop or where you got it from and maybe get your self a paradise gourami. They are related to bettas and have to go to the surface to breath and also can take lower temps than the Betta. You still need to do regular water changes but not as often as with goldfish. Or you might wish to keep snails or shrimp (or both) . I have dwarf blue crawfish that could be kept in smaller containers (I have them in a twenty gallon tank though). Snails would be another candidate for a smaller tank.

  4. Well, you shouldn't tell people not to tell you to get a larger tank, because you perhaps shouldn't have ANY tank if that's all you can do. I would say, not long. Upgrade ASAP to ensure the fish's well being.

  5. it depends on how often you clean the tank and if it has a filter or not

  6. With regular water changes they should be ok until you can get a larger tank, but keep in mind they are very dirty fish and they produce lots of ammonia so every day 40% water changes are necessary.

  7. i think its just fine as long as it is a feeder goldfish because its fate would be to die or get eaten by a predatory fish i had a feeder gold fish in a 1 gallon it died in 5 years i put it in a large tank with a bass and a blue gill all the same size except the gold fish was about 6 inches and the bass killed it. i no longer have the bass and the bluegill i put them back into the lake where i caught them

  8. "Do not tell me to get a larger tank. or that a larger tank is more suitable. because all I am able to do right now is the one gallon"....Are you serious or are you just looking to get a rise out of the fine people in the fish section?  If you cannot afford them then you should not have them.  Its as simple as that,  A goldfish should have 30 gallons for the first and 10 more gallons for each additional fish.  A goldfish can live for a very short time in a 1 gallon bowl,  before they die of ammonia poisoning.  The need a top of the line filtration system because they are such heavy waste producers.  If they do not die of ammonia poisoning first then the will die due to stunted growth.  It is a big misconception that fish will grow to their environment.  That is true to a point.  The outside will stop growing, but the digestive tract will continue to grow ultimately killing the fish 20-30 years premature.

Anyone who is proud to have kept a goldfish alive for 5 years has nothing to be proud of when a goldfish can live up to 30 years.

  9. I'm sorry to say but if all you can do is a one gallon bowl then you do not need a goldfish at all. If you already have this goldfish then you should find someone with a larger tank or a pond and give it to them. It will either die from ammonia burns or will be so stunted it will die from its internal organs giving out. You should have at least a 20g to even consider a goldfish. If you want to have a one gallon with something in it then you should get a betta or an african dwarf frog. Even then it will require frequent water changes.

  10. No matter how much you clean that tank...it will never be clean. 3 goldfish in a tiny 1 gallon prison is not going to work. Soon your fish will end up sick...and die. Then you wont have to worry about people who have experience telling to to upgrade.

    Upgrade your tank!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  11. Its a load of c**p that goldfish need to be kept in these huge tanks. Some goldfish wont grow bigger then 3 inchs. Seriously as long as they are doing fine, wait to see how big they get.
