Best to buy it the day you're going to eat it, but it will stay fresh for 2 days. A great way to keep fish fresh is as follows:

Rinse fillets in salt water and pat dry.

Fill a plastic container (as long and as wide as the fish) half way with ice.

Place fish fillets in a sealed, plastic bag and set on top of ice. Place it in the coldest part of the fridge. Will stay fresh that way for 2 days and the ice should not melt much during that time. If so, replace ice.

gut them and wrap them in saran wrap or a plastic resealable bag to keep out air. I wouldn't keep more than 2 days. When fish start to smell fishy they are old I'm told. If you must keep longer, freeze them in airtight container or bags.
