Question:

How long will cooking oil stay "good" in an unsealed container?

I don't use non-stick pans so I have to use a little oil when cooking. Yet, I hate bring out this big jug of oil every time I need a dash.

I've seen glass containers you can pour oil into. They have a lid with a spout, so they aren't completely sealed from air. Are these acceptable to use for canola oil and olive oil? How long can I expect each to last in one of these?

Would I be better to only fill them halfway?

  1. Both types of olive oil should be stored in a cool dark place and should last up to 6 months. Leaving them in the dressing bottle is totally fine. Olive oil can also be stored in the refrigerator for up to 1 year. It will get cloudy and thick in the refrigerator, but once it’s brought to room temperature it will become liquid again.

  3. At the restaurant I work at I use a clear squeeze bottle.  I never worry about oil going bad on the shelf.  The only way it will go bad is if it is in the sun all the time.

  4. Those glass containers are for one time use at the table.  They are generally used for individual salads along with other condiments.  Just put some oil in a glass jar with a lid and keep it nearby or buy a glass container with a stopper.  They are cheap.
