Question:

How long will he be waiting for US Citizenship approval?

Hi! My boyfriend is an England citizen from birth, and his father married a US woman and quickly became a citizen (2 weeks!). So we don't have a really good idea of a time frame it would take for him to get approved.

He put his application in about a week ago, and I'm just wondering how long it's going to take to get approved? I hate having to have him go home after 3 months, and then come back 2 months later. It's pricey and I miss him!!!

  1. you can check out waiting times as they vary according to state and where you apply in a state. You can find out here https://egov.uscis.gov/cris/jsps/ptimes....

its usually between 9mths to a yr at moment due to the high volume of applications.

    all the best

  2. the question is how old is your boyfriend?  if his stepmom sponsored both of them at the same time, he should get it around the time his dad got his...but if he is over 21, its a different story.  did the stepmom adopt him too?  tell us more details in order to give you a definite answer.

***update: unfortunately, from what i understand about immigration, your bf is an adult and is unable to follow his stepmom when she sponsored his dad.  she cannot adopt him either b/c he is an adult....your boyfriend cannot apply for citizenship nor greencard just like that.  there needs to be a basis (whether it is through family sponsorship (ie his dad), through work (getting a work visa), through going to school (F-1 student) or you marrying him).  his dad is not a us citizen but a greencard holder. it would take his dad another 5 years before he can apply for citizenship.  his dad as a greencard holder can sponsor his son, but this could take a very long time before a visa number is available (between 5-10 years).   but during the pending time, your boyfriend cannot stay in the states until a visa number becomes available, unless he gets a visa for work or go to school.  he needs to stay somehow legally in the u.s. while that is pending...if he already has a college education in england, maybe he could find an employer that will allow him to get the work visa (h1b).  if he wants to further his education, he can apply for a bachelors, masters or phd (but tuition is very expensive).

but the fastest way, as you saw between his dad and stepmom, is through marriage.  you can marry him  or follow him to england, get to know each other, get married, sponsor him and then bring him to the states....

but unfortunately, your bf just applying like that  with no basis is going to be rejected.

so all in all, he needs to:

-have his father sponsor him (can take 5-10 years)

    - in the meantime, go to school (F-1 student visa)

-or if he already has an education: find an employer in his field of college study and apply for the H1B visa in April 1 of every year.  he would have to have at least a bachelors degree for this one. the h1b visa lasts 3 years, but you can renew for another 3 years... but the h1b visa is competitive b/c there is a 60,000 quotas for bachelors degree and 20,000 for higher degrees...its a lottery system where computer chooses random names.

-if you two think that father sponsoring is too long, and going to school and h1b visa are out of the question, you marrying him should be the last option...

    good luck!
