Tomato will never go up that much. Tomatoes are dependent on weather. There is abundance of tomatoes on good weather. It cost cheap then. If there is drought, no tomatoes. But it will never reach the stage to cost 5 dollars inspite of the rising petrol prices.

Thats been happening before the gas was going up...Publix Supermarkets and a few other obnoixiously high priced grocers have had organic tomatoes for 4.99 a pound for a couple of years...Some of the tomatoes such as beefsteak etc..get in excess of a pound..I'm growing some that are heirlooms that reach 15 to 18 ounces...

Interesting question.

We started growing tomatoes in pots this spring because they cost nearly a dollar a piece in stores and even farmers markets here in Florida.

That is outrageous, considering you can get 20 to 40 large tomatoes from a single plant within a short growing period.

Duh, petrol is used to transport the tomatoes amoung other things.
