  1. 6 rounds

  2. You'll be given an "instant index" after you post one score.  You'll be given an official USGA index after 10 scores. This may differ slightly from state to state. But the your handicap is based on the best 10 scores of the past 20 rounds plus any eligible tournament scores.

  3. 20 scores to get a true handicap but the system will give you a handicap after 5 scores.  Yahoo and TheGolfChannel will give you an approximate handicap if you enter scores on their sites.

  4. You must post at least 5 scores, and then wait for the next revision period, which is either every 2 weeks or month.  If you are in a colder area of the US, you will not be able to get an official handicap until the "season" reopens.

Call up a local course, ask for their PGA Professional.  He will give you more details.

  5. Most handicap systems will give you a temporary one after you have posted 10 rounds.  Your true handicap won't go into effect until you have posted 20 because it is calculated using the lowest 10 scores out of the most recent twenty posted.

  6. If you're a member at a golf club or online someewhere, you just need to post a certain number of scores. That's it. I think the number is like 10 or so.
