  1. Let's look at first things first. Surfing is an ocean sport. before you decide to surf, decide to know and understand the ocean. Learn to be at home with its currents, rips, undertows and sometimes BIG waves. I don't just mean being good at swimming in a pool, the ocean can be very unforgiving. I have seen lots of really good pool swimmers have to get rescued. You have to learn surf etiquette (so the experienced surfers in the line up don't want to drown you), how to paddle and take off on a wave, and how to ride a wave. There are already WAY TOO MANY DANGEROUS PEOPLE in the water. A danger to themselves and other surfers. Don't join their ranks.

Lessons are usually the best way to start, unless you are an adolescent or young adult with lots of pals who surf who can teach you. Most people learn best on long boards, although I have seen lots of surfers start on a short board and master it.  Perhaps you should have thought of that BEFORE you bought a short board. Before you worry about the size of the waves, start by developing your water skills. And get lessons. If you don't want to take a formal lessons, get your surfing pals to help you. They will actually be in the water with you, not out here in cybersapace like we are. I have been surfing since 1966, and I still can't figure out how to teach somebody to surf via computer.

Aren't you the young fellow who asked about the NSP and Isle popout boards? You have to read some of then answers these folks have been giving you. Get to a good  surf shop before you waste any more money!!!! Good luck!

  2. You want waves at least 3-4 foot to be able to stand up and stay on the wave. The more power the better.

  3. about 6 hours

  4. lesson 1: your width is 19".

lesson 2: width and thickness are 2 different things.

lesson 3: your thickness is the 3rd number on the bottom.

advice: keep riding your other board.

  5. medium size waves

  6. i learned to surf on my 6'4" shortboard and i am 5'6" and 130lbs. it took me about a week lo get it. every day, about 6 hours a day. waves that are about 4-5 ft. high are ideal for learning on a shortboard and if they are powerful that is good. i hope this helps. good luck learning on a shortboard
