Visa for which country? If you're in the UK and you use the Visa Shop you'll get it the very next day. If you're in the USA and applying for a work permit (H1-B1, for example) it could be months. A Green Card takes about 8 weeks after approval, for example. Call the appropriate consulate to get an estimated time, or visit their website.

That is a question for the United States Post Office.  Since it will now be necessary for Americans to have a visa or passport to enter and leave Canada, the United States Passport Office has been overwhelmed.  It has been taking months and months to process these things.  It will eventually get there.  I have heard that there is a website where you can check on your status.  I don't know what it might be, but if you go to the post office and ask them, they will surely be able to tell you.  Good luck.
