  1. get a dehumidifier in there as quickly as possible. Not only can molds grow but wood can rot which will effect the structure of your home and can be dangerous. There may be some place you can rent a heavy duty humidifier, look in the phone book and call hardware stores and homefire clean up business' like service masters. Then after you are sure the moisture issue is taken care of, use those mesh netting things with absorbant lava rocks in them, I think you can buy them at walmart, and other odor absorbing materials. Also, make sure the carpet and pad under it are completely dry.

because of your asthma, you  might be more prone to having an asthma attack from the mold spores in the air. I would suggest getting an air purifier.

  2. Lots of times, there are dried out liquids in the carpet padding just waiting to be activated by water. Pet smells, musty moldy smells, urine from potty training gone wrong, even spilled foods. get the carpet rolled back and get the padding either replaced or dried out with a fan. You can rent a fan at most rental places, just tell them you need it for water overflow remediation. Smell will go away as soon as it is dried, or the active bacteria that are causing the smell go back into dormancy. Febreeze  or "odor out" may help.

  3. More than likely it will depend on how long it takes to dry and then it would depend on whether you have to treat for mold or any other foreign materials.

  4. If your carpet allows (like berber) you could use bleach.  Since you have a young child, I would recommend white vinegar.  This will disinfect the carpet as well as kill mold spores.  You may dilute the vinegar with water, but personally I would just pour it on the spot and affected areas.  Let it sit on the carpet for about 10 minutes and then blot it up with a towel.  Run the bathroom fan to help air it out if you wish. Give it a couple of days to completely dry and repeat the process if you feel it is necessary.  This is a safe way to clean just about anything including pet accidents.  It removes the smell so well that the animal won't be tempted to make it a regular relief spot. Good luck.

  5. make sure you air out the vacuum - one of mine grew mold. It all depends... do you have a fan that you can put into the bathroom? Once our basement flooded - water pipes broke  - and we use that to air it out and to dry it - may help with the smell

  6. I would think that the smell would most likely be from the carpet. Probably a musty smell. Carpet does not seal the floor. When one takes up old carpeting they find a layer of fine dust underneath. Steam cleaning by a pro would be your best bet if you are in a hurry. Would guess about 48 hours for it to dry at 70 degrees.
