I'm planning a trip to Stuttgar Germany to visit sister with my daughter who is 12 years old. I don't know when we will be able to return to Germany so I want to make this special for her. I would like to take her to Paris France, but what would be the best way to get there? what other places does anyone suggest? she is into museums, out door activities, and just have fun. we will be there for 2 weeks in March. I just can't wait.

  1. Fly.  Look at budget airlines available in Stuttgart.  You can get flights cheaper than trains and even driving considering the gas prices and much quicker.  Once in Paris, you can take the subway to get to your locations.

    Have fun...

  2. Oh you are so lucky. Sounds like a fantastic trip. I would not drive to Paris, either, the train system is top notch.....Great museums in Berlin, Munich, Vienna and of course Paris...LOL they are all in different directions, however.....Hope you have a wonderful time....

  3. If you are not an absolute slowcoach you should make it in about 7 hours, but I would NOT recommend to take the car to Paris, driving there is an utter nightmare. Public transport in Paris, on the other hand, is phantastic and very affordable.

But why would you want to spend all that time on a journey to Paris? Romantic medieval towns are all around Stuttgart, in 2 hours you can be in the Black Forest, walking there is one of the best experiences of Germany you can have. Go and visit Rotenburg or Noerdlingen, go to Augsburg and book an evening with the puppet theatre "Augsburger Puppenkiste", you will both enjoy it, even if you don't understand the language. If you go to the Black Forest, take a trip over the Rhine to Strassbourg (should be under 1 hour's driving), there is the best gothic cathedral in the world beside Notre Dame de Paris, the medieval inner city is still all there, and you'll find English speaking guides all over the place.

Whatever you decide to do, have fun!

  4. I live almost 6 hours from Paris and 1 hour from Stuttgart, so it should take you 7 hours, plus any stops you make. I know everyone says don't bother driving,  and I've driven to Paris a few times, and prefer the train, but if you have to drive, the countryside is still very pretty. I wouldn't drive into Paris directly though, your car will be scratched/dented within hours and you'll be stuck in traffic. Find a place to park your car outside the city and take a train in if you drive. If I were you, I would take the train, it's faster and you won't have to find a place to park your car. Paris is beautiful, make sure you go to some bakeries, yum.  As well, the Champ du Mars in front of the Eiffel Tower is a great place to picnic.

Have a wonderful time in Paris, and make sure you visit around Stuttgart as well while you're there!

  5. If you want to drive there it will take you between nine and ten hours. I did it myself about 15 years ago and don't think I would do it like that again though. Driving in Paris is absolutely crazy. I would suggest taking the train. They have special tickets for trips like that. The special is called 'Städtepässe in Europa', you would need the 'Paris Visite-Pass'. You get free use of the Métro, Bus and S-Bahn and also discounts for museums, restaurants and shopping. I'm sure your sister can give you some more information on that.

(Maybe you want to check this out, it's in english.)

Make sure you get yourself a good travel guide about Paris too. Go to your local bookstore and check some of them out. Don't go without one, you'll regret it later.

I could go on and on but I'm sure once you check the travel guides you'll find all the information you need.

Don't forget to take your daughter to Schloß Neuschwanstein while you're already in Germany.

Have a great trip and enjoy! :-)

  6. As long as it will take you to get from one point to the other, depending on the mode of transport.
