How long will it take me to walk 4.9 miles?

I am a normal fit lad and need to no approximatly the length of time it will take me to walk 4.9 miles please cars broke down and need to be at work at 5am and theres no buses dont no what time to leave please help

Here is the real information.  It has been my experience that with some effort a walker will cover a mile in a time of 18 to 20 minutes.  That is 3 to 3.4 miles an hours.  So your walking commute will be from 84 to 96 minutes.  Forget being able to average 5 miles an hour.  That is in speed walking range which takes a lot of training, conditioning and technique.

A better way to shorten the time of your commute is to ride a bicycle.  A decent average speed for a cyclist is between 12 to 15 miles an hour.  Your commute would only take between 20 to 30 minutes.  At that time of morning you will need lights both front and rear on a bicycle.  A reflective vest helps a great deal.  Also reflective tape on the bike.  I attach a flashing red light on the back of my helmet to get a light up into a driver's line of sight.

PS if you do end up walking I will just about bet you will have sore shins for several days after.  Just the nature of walking a distance when you are not conditioned to that motion.
