  4. you don't want to freeze a glass of water because the water inside the glass would expand and cause the glass to shatter. Not really a good situation.

    You can use the mass and density along with the specific heat of both the glass and water to determine the heat lost to the environment (water density is 1000 kg/m3 and spec heat is 4186.5 J/kg°C)

    It also depends just how cold it is outside as there is a slight log natural effect with colder temperatures but that's a minor thing.

    Last thing to bring in is the latent heat (water is 334922 J/kg °C), so what that means is that when the water reaches 0°C it will need this much more energy to be lost before it fully turns to ice.
