ok so I am planning to learn to play an alto sax

I already played a trumpet for a year and i can now hit high Gs pretty well (the one right above the staff)

I am planning to practice atleast 45 mins a day

In two months (when school starts), how well do you think i will be able to play?

i already have strong lips (because of the trumpet), good breath support, and am determined to learn the sax

  1. The sax is a pretty easy instrument to pick up, especially if you already have the musical knowledge. I picked it up in about 2-3 weeks practicing about 1 hour a day. Since I already played clarinet it was very easy. The harder part is learning how to control your sound so your not to blasty or sqeaky, but that also come very easy.

I think that if you start now you will be able to play well enough that you don't sound like c**p.

Good Luck to you and enjoy it, because saxophones are way cooler and more fun to play then the boring old trumpet *wink*

  2. Once you pick up how to finger and blow it you should be playing very well in a year or so, though like any instrument it depends on practice, talent, and your teacher.

  3. It helps that you can already read music. I've been playing the alto for 7 years now and I have a decent handle on it. Get a private lessons teacher and practice like crazy.

  4. It sounds like you have a good head start. In two months, you should be pretty good. 45 minutes a day is great practicing habit, so keep it up and good luck. It also depends on whether you like the sax or not. If you don't like it, you won't learn it.

  5. I learned to play sax in basically two weeks.

But I switched from flute so I didn't really have to learn any new fingerings.

But you don't have to learn how to read a different clef so two months should be plenty of time if you're really determined.

  6. my friend started playing alto sax less than a month ago and is already doing her grade 2, she could aready read music a little bit because she used to play clarinet for a year. It sounds like you'll pick it up pretty soon too especially as you've already been playing an instrument :D good luck!

  7. That is great... 45 min. a day is good and do practice 7 days a week.  That is the secret to learning an instrument. Daily Practice .

The sax is not hard to blow. I find the trumpet is much harder. Plus, you only have 3 pistons on the trumpet and umpteen keys on the sax. Get the correct fingering going and you are set.

Have a positive attitude and Good Luck !!!

  8. it all depends on the person playing it.

but i think that if you can play one instrument, you can play them all!

because you are used to playing a brass instrument, it might be hard to adjust to placing the mouthpiece in your mouth, and working with a reed will feel funny at first.

but with alot of practice, you can certainly do it!!!

    good luck!
