hi i have played guitar for a few years now, but have had surgery on my left hand and my physiotherapist is unsure if i will get full mobility back in my fingers, the thought of never playing again is depressing me and so was thinking of maybe learning to play left handed instead, how long do u guys think it might take? or would i be like a beginner starting from the basics again? thanks

  1. First you'd have to learn to use your other hand just llike the one you used before.

  2. It will be extremely tough. One time just for kicks, I flipped my guitar around and tried to play a C chord.  (Obviously the strings were upside down and therefore didn't sound like a C) But it felt so unnatural and uncomfortable.  It was also difficult to strum left handed.

I think in a way, it might be even more difficult than being a beginner, because you already know how to play, and it's frustrating to  have to unlearn everything, and flip it around.

I think you might be better off trying to disprove your doctor.  Who knows, maybe trying to play will allow you to regain mobility in your hand.  In any case, if you want it badly enough, you'll play again someday.  Good Luck

  3. It might take time and be difficult, but with your attitude you can do it.  It will start very slow and you may get discouraged but stick to it and you will do fine.

Yes you will be on basics for a while.
