How long will it take to move up in the ranks in the NYPD?

How long will it take to become a Sgt, LT, Cpt?

I believe it takes something like 8 years before you can take the Sergeant test but how long will it take before you can take the test above Sgt.? Thanks

This link tells you how many supervisors there are in the department. It should give you an idea of how competitive promotions are.

Your first step would be sergeant, they post for that test once every 2-3 years.

To be able to take the Sgt exam you must have 3years on the job. Then to take the LT. exam you must be a SGT. with at least one year of being at a Sgt rank. then so on and so on. above LT. is mostly appointed jobs and they don't require you to take another civil service test ike the Sgt/Lt's. At that point its who you know. Good-luck

Depends on the person, how well they do and how ambitious they are. I have seen 28 year old Sgt, i have seen 35 year old Captains.
