The room is about 10x11, and right now it is a bright orange, so it will take a couple of coats of white paint. What is the best paint to use?

  1. 2 coats -- 3 hours

  2. use a coat of primer, it'll be some shade of grey and will help with dim the orange a lot more effieciently

with one person, about a little over an hour per coat, make sure you give plenty of drying time inbetween coats

  3. First, paint over the existing paint with a good stain-blocking primer (like Kilz). It's a lot cheaper than paint (about $12 a gallon instead of at least $25 a gallon for the paint) and it will allow you to cover the old color with only one coat of paint. It's also faster, since the primer dries and is ready for the next coat (second coat of primer or paint coat) within about an hour.

As far as a good paint, Valspar is pretty good if you go to a home improvement store. Otherwise, any name-brand paint store (Sherwin Williams, Dunn Edwards, Frazee, etc.) is a good quality paint. It costs about twice as much as the cheaper stuff at home improvement stores. But, it covers better so you'll use about half as much (only one coat plus some touch-up).
