How long will petrol last? what alternatives are there?

Some people say we are already approaching or have already passed the world's peak oil production capacity.  While there are still plenty of remaining reserves to last another generation or two, there are few if any new major oil deposit discoveries.  There should also be questions as to the rate that oil can be extracted to meet the world's growing demand.  The pressure in an oil field must be kept up by not over producing that field so as to be able to extract the reserves that remain in the field economically.  The alternatives to petrol are natural gas, biofuels (but not derived from corn ethanol), electric vehicles powered from the grid to a lesser extent solar, and least likely hydrogen.
