  1. The statement that the olympics makes a profit is a farce Greeks will still be paying the debt for there last olympics for generations, The olympics have never broke even they are a massive drain on the public purse and the whole concept has been blown all out of proportion , it was originally designed by the Greeks to bring warring factions together in a way that great friendships were established and the heat of battle defused in sporting fashion . it was a joyous occasion were the loser shrugged and said next time . now its a bettering the Joneses , and showing off at the publics expense . If the people with all these grandiose ideas were asked to foot the bill you would hear the roar on the other side of the world.

  2. Well they will probably announce it at the last minute, but everyone knows really because we have to then pay it in Taxes + suddenly they will get very high

    x

  3. Many previous Olympic Games have made a financial loss including the most recent in Athens. So to assume the games will be beneficial to the country no matter what we spend is idiotic. Our government has a very poor record of funding large projects successfully (remember the Millennium Dome).

They will probably announce any cost rises immediately after the open-top bus ceremony in London, when everybody is still on a high.

  4. Well they seem to go up on a monthly basis at the moment - will probably end up costing £600000000000000000000000000

  5. The costs are bound to increase. The initial price was just an estimate and at a time with very different economic conditions to what we have now. Inflation is pushing the price up of fuel, and raw materials used within construction.

  6. We all know that the costs will be astronomical. Now that London has a Tory mayor, legislation will be passed when the Tories take power to spread the cost throughout the country so that Londoners will not have to bear such a high council tax increase, and Boris will be re-elected. So be prepared to tighten you belt, and do it for Queen and country.

  7. They already have.

  8. Whatever it costs will be worth it. The Olympics ALWAYS make a profit, and after the Games, a semi derelict area of east London will have been redeveloped, transport links in the area improved, local businesses will have had huge windfalls. Britain in general, and London in particular will profit enormously.

Costs for London are lower than they might have been. Several venues already exist (like Wimbledon) or will simply have hired temporary seating (like Horseguards' Parade)

If the Olympics were ever in any danger of losing money, do you think so many cities would be desperate to host it? I am sure Parisiens would have loved the non-existant headache you predict.

  9. Well the government can just dip into lottery funds again - Brown's on the rob !

  10. The cost rising is inevitable, the real crime is that the cash will not be spent with UK companies and the UK Government will get well and truly fleeced by foreign contractors and suppliers.

Team GB have done an amazing job in Beijing, and I am sure they will do us proud in 2012, but at the end of the day it will still be a team of lions lead by donkeys.
