My brother is in Portugal now with his family and as all the petrol stations are on strike he has not got enough petrol to return to the airport tomorrow with his hire car.

I am flying out to Faro tomorrow, and I am worried about the fuel situation. Has anyone got any idea how long it will last?

  1. Have you not been watching the NEWS on TV... about all the TRUCK DRIVERS in SPAIN and PORTUGAL who are on strike and have clogged the motor ways with their SEMI's and are not delivering ANYTHING to ANYONE ... except the POLICE are accompanying the Petrol Tankers that try to re-supply petrol stations in Barcelona.

There is NO END IN SIGHT... and the stores are running out of everything... AND... the boycott will CONTINUE until SOMETHING is done about the HIGH PETROL PRICES...

Or... didn't you KNOW this?  Because everyone ELSE knows about it.

  2. Oh dear, garrisonbight doesnt seam to have grasped your question does he? Im sure you can appreciate why there are the problems with fuel supplies in Portugal and Spain, just not how long they are gong to last for.

Im not sure how long it will last, and I can feel for your brother - in a foreign country and probably not watching the news (its in portugese so unless he is an exception probably cant understand it). He might be able to get in touch with the hire company and see if there is a local depot he can leave the car at and then get the train or bus to the airport.

As for you going to Faro -public transport ight be the way to go, though if you have a car booked ask the hire people what their thoughts are based on their local knowledge and their ability to listen to the news in portugese

  3. I don't know how long it will last-but I do know that the country is very quickly grinding to a halt with filling stations closing and many supermarkets already closed.

Check with the airport before travelling as Lisbon airport may already be on limited flights.

  4. I live in Spain which doesn't answer your question. Our garages have no fuel, especially diesel. The supermarkets are running short of fresh produce, but I found a butcher today and he had plenty of meat.

The good thing for you is that you are aware of what is happening. If you hire a car, then just becareful how much fuel you use. There will be no adverse effect on your holiday. The sun will still shine and you can eat out or have a drink in a bar.

The strike can't last forever. There is talk here it may be over by the weekend.

The weather forecast looks good, so enjoy yourself...ok?
