  1. theres no rulebook on where to start.

my suggestion is try out your buddies boards and find what fits you ... youd be surprised what you might like.

and its not all about length ... a shorter, wider and thicker floats just as well as a long thinned out board. i have a 5'8" fish thats 20 1/2" wide and 2 3/4" thick

and h**l im 6'3"... yet it floats me good with crazy responsiveness.

its all about comfort and board control.

  2. technically you could start now.....right after you read this go surf a shortboard and do your best! thats it!  and have FUN!!!

  3. It took me 1 whole season.. I surfed 4 hours a day for 6 months until i felt i mastered the long board. Hang 10 and all..

    hope that help.

  4. im 15 and ivce been surfing since i was 10 and im just getting a surfboard now...it takes a long time to master it.  i started on a foam board then a long board then an 8ft bic plastic board then a7'3 bic board then a fiberglass funboard 6'8now i am getting a 5'10 shortboard.  its hard and takes time to master

  5. Do you need to go to a short board? When you are able to take off and maneuver a short board, your ready. You can always try out a rental or one owned by one of your surf buddies every now and then to see how you feel. And don't forget, Lots of surfers never give up on that wonderful longboard 'glide.'

  6. haha no you won't.

It's physically impossible to surf everyday.

If you were really dedicated you wouldn't be asking stupid questions

    you'd be surfing.

  7. well first, there are not good waves everyday. it's not enough to just go out and surf the same conditions everyday. you have to challenge yourself to get better. that being said, depending on what board you're currently riding, you might be able to move down to a shortboard in as little as a year. that's if you really pick surfing up quickly though. not just the paddling out and standing up, but the wave selection, the turning of and controlling your board, the mechanics, as well.

a better idea would be to start on a mini-mal (around 8'6") or funboard (7'6" or so) to get the basics then move to a longer shortboard (6'10"-7'0").

surfing is more than just shortboarding, however. actually you can catch a lot of smaller waves with a longer board anyways.
