  1. Depends on your trajectory... If you're using a low-fuel approach, it can take 6 to 9 months, because you want to approach Mars slowly.  If you have plenty of braking fuel, it can be as little as 3 months, depending on how much fuel you have.

    Of course... if you're sending up an impact probe, it can be as little as 10 days...  (The Probe we sent to Pluto crossed Mars' orbit 10 days after it was launched - but it was moving *way* too fast to be an effective Mars probe - had Mars even been in the right position.)


  2. 6 months is normal for the way NASA does things.  A lot depends on the relative position of the planets or perhaps more accurately, the relative position of the planets when you arrive.  This is because when you launch, you are not aiming for your destination, but where your destination will be.  In reality travel time also depends on how much fuel you care to use.  If you have an unlimited fuel budget, and you could take the Gs, it would be quite possible to get there in a couple of days.
