Just thinking about my future and I was wondering, after I finish sixth form and uni, and am a qualified doctor, how long would it take me before I can become an American citizen as I would like to live there when I'm older =D x

  1. If you qualify as a Doctor in the UK you should be able to apply for jobs in Medicine once you have some experience. US employers can hire you if they can prove they can't find anyone locally to fill the job. They would then sponsor you for a visa. Once you are here you can apply for a green card. 5 years after getting your first green card you can apply for citizenship. It's a long process but if it's what you want you are already on the right track. Working visas are in short supply and are only given to people who are well educated and can contribute to US society. Doctors can be in short supply here for 2 reasons. Firstly Medical School is very expensive here and that stops a lot of people from applying in the first place. Secondly malpractice insurance here is extortionate and has forced many doctors out of practice.

Get the best marks you can for your A Levels and then while at Uni keep your eye on your long term plans. That will make it easier to keep your nose to the grindstone when you are tempted to just get by. Good Luck.

  2. Well, obtaining a Green Card is not that easy. It depends on what country you are from. If you are coming from the UK, France, or Germany you have an easier time getting the card then if you were coming from Pakistan or another Middle Eastern country.

You need to speak with an attorney and go from their, only he or she can help you.

Also, it may take one year or two-three years but it all depends on a number of factors. Best advice is, stay in your own country.

  3. 5 years

  4. Just to clarify: a green card is not US citizenship.

In order to apply for US citizenship, you need to have had a green card for 5 years, or 3 years if you are married to a US citizen.

To get a green card, there are several avenues you can explore. Check out http://www.uscis.gov/greencard for more info.
