How long would it take me to train a carrier pigeon to bring me M&Ms?

I would like to train a pigeon to repeatedly fly back and forth between my home and my office, bringing me one dark chocolate M&M with each trip. The one-way distance is about 13 miles by road, and approximately 9-10 miles as the crow (or pigeon, haha) flies. How long should I expect to have to train it?

Also, would I be able to use the robin who built a nest on my gutter downspout for the same purpose?

  1. It depends on how well you negotiate with him. You're not going to eat them all are you? I mean, he has to have some. Same goes for the Robin. There ain't no free lunch.

  2. im friends with a someone who used to own carrier pigeons, he hired someone to teach them to fly notes back and forth from California to Georgia to his wife but i dont think they ever came back, so im not sure how reliable they would be..they might eat all the m&m's before it gets to you haha

  3. Use should Train a blue bird. Not only will it bring you your m&ms but that motha fucka will guard your M&ms with its life. Have you seen how over protective those things are? They will doge you if you come near their nests..

  4. Ha!

  5. You did't indicate plain or peanut. Remember in the calculations you have the extra weight of the nut. Also you will find a rather handy table for calculations at the end of the internet. Careful not to go to far rebooting is a pain.

  6. It took me about a month but the distance was shorter.

  7. two months

  8. Tricky question, but I am sure the robin would be faster than the pigeon.

  9. Dark Chocolate M&Ms are THE BEST. ;)

I think the training should go fairly quickly, as pigeons are predisposed to such behavior.

I don't think it would take more than a few weeks to perfect the pigeon's methods and speed.

I think that the pigeon would do a better job than the robin, unless you really want to snack and have both birds tote  the robin's nest full of M&Ms to you all at once.

  10. ok, M&Ms SUCK. They are made by Mars Inc. or whatever, who also makes Mars chocolate bars, starburst, skittles, and more. Mars contributes to pointless animal testing people who do radom painful tests on animals for no reason at all whatsoever. Go to www.marscandykills.com to find out more

  11. i don't know how long it would take to train a "Homing Pigeon" to pick up a candy on each trip.  But since "Carrier Pigeons" have been extinct for about 100 years, that would be a really neat trick.
