  1. Take the bus or fly up - air tickets doesn't cost that much nowadays

  2. Last time I looked, the train didn't go all the way to Canberra....  I know, it's ridiculous. You'll have to take a bus, I'm afraid... Just don't drink the water on the bus - bring your own water bottle.  Just a little tip.

This link shows a combined train-bus trip: http://www.railmaps.com.au/journey_resul...

EDIT: I agree that flying would be far better - the train/bus trip takes AT LEAST 8 hours!

  3. Contrary to zuchini's answer, it is totally possible to get from Melbourne to Canberra by train! =) I have caught it many times. Its a safe and comfortable ride that takes about 9 hours. Its especially good if you can travel at night and sleep all night on the train, then wake up in the morning at your destination!

There's a train that goes from Melbourne to Yass Junction (a country town about 45mins out of canberra), and then a bus meets you at the Yass train station and brings you in to Canberra.

An adult ticket will cost you about $108 one way.

    A student/child/concession ticket is $54.

So all up your thinking of $216 for an adult or just $108 for a student/child/concession.

Use this website to book: http://www.countrylink.info

To take a plane from Melbourne to Canberra & back on these days, using the new TIGER AIRWAYS would cost you just $210 for an adult fare, and it will only take about an hour. Only catch is you'll be traveling in the morning instead of the evening. You can get flights quite cheap these days, so its worth checking it out!

But train is a good option for students on a tight budget. =)

    Happy traveling!
