  1. It depends on where you want to start and end up, and what order you visit places in. If you fly into Rome, for example, you can drive to Naples, but then you'd have to backtrack past Rome to get to the northern points.

Viamichelin.com is a good site for route planning, driving directions, and estimation of driving times here in Europe. http://www.viamichelin.com/viamichelin/g... It will also estimate tolls along the way. You need to add time spent at stops along the way and allow for traffic and weather conditions. Times will also depend on the exact starting and ending points within the cities.

This is a rough estimate starting in Venice and ending in Naples:

Venice - Milan 3.5 hr mostly on the A4 autostrada

Milan - Monterosso (Cinque Terre) 2 hr 42 min

    Monterosso - Pisa 1 hr 25 min

    Pisa - Florence 1 hr 19 min

    Florence - Rome 2 hr 50 min

    Rome - Naples 2 hr 25 min

These estimates use the quickest routes from center to center and don't account for traffic, weather, or finding your exact destination on arrival. The quickest routes aren't necessarily the most scenic, and if I were doing this, I would want to take my time and stop at some intermediate points along the way. All of these are accessible by train, you don't have to drive to do this trip.

  2. Driving in Roma and Naples is nightmarish.

Consider the train, cheap fast, arrives in downtown.
