i've been playing the trumpet for about 7 years now, but haven't played it for 2. I still know how to read music and play everything, so I'm wondering about how long it would take to be able to play the piccolo decently for a pep band ensemble? i have about 3 1/2 months to learn it, and i know how to play the basic notes on a flute, but only play it here and there. i just need to be able to get by on a student model. thanks

  1. well, it would take a shorter time since you can read sheet music. then again, it also depends on how talented you are, and how fast you can pick up new things.

  2. Hi Tara..... I have a question for you that should answer your question better than anyone here will be able to.   How long did it take for you to learn the trumpet and play it decently?  Comparing playing the piccolo and trumpet is like comparing apples and oranges...   The only thing similar is that they both make a loud noise.     It takes 3 times the air support to play piccolo than trumpet.   You probably know that students learn flute before they pick up the piccolo... reason is.... there are so much of the basics to learn first and then these basics can be applied to playing the piccolo.    I have one very important piece of advice... and especially if you are going to try to teach yourself....   Order or buy the Rubank Elementary Method for Flute and Piccolo book.  Costs about $7.00... and will get you started with easy one-a-week lessons and includes a fingering chart in the front.   If you find you cannot get a sound out of the headjoint...  get with a flute/piccolo friend who can work with you on that.    Hope I was able to give you some helpful ideas.  Whether or not you will be able to play the piccolo in 100 days will depend on how much effort and dedication you put into it.  Thanks for reading.
