How long would it take to ride a bike from Michigan to California?

I average a speed of 10-20 miles and hour. i am pretty much looking to do this with three of my friends. also any other tips about backpacking. like how much money to bring. where to sleep. ect.

you've answered your own question. almost. you need to figure out how many miles it is, from start to finish, then fill in the blanks on this relatively simple equation: time=miles/mph.

do you average 10-20 mph (a very wide range, btw) on a fully laden bike, or on your favorite loop? do a few loops with your gear, and see what the difference is.

you'll want to bring minimal gear, as you're carrying the weight on your bike, and the dimensions of panniers are limited. you'll need a tent, sleeping bag, camp stove, mess kit warm clothes for the evening, extra cycling kit, rain gear, tools, cell phone, etc. I wouldn't bring a ton of cash. bring your debit card, and make sure you've got money in the bank. depending on the time  of year, book some camp sites in advance. every few days, stay at a cheap motel, so you can shower, clean laundry, etc.
