Question:

How long would it take you to cycle 230 miles? What do you think?

It usually takes me 3 h 40 m by motor vehicle. From Indiana to Michigan in late July. With maybe one large fender pack to hold uniform (4 day sport related seminar) and necessities. I would stop at resataurants on the way in stead of packing food.

What do you think? Any tips?

  1. I've ridden a lot of centuries (100 day rides), but when traveling on multiday tours, we don't plan on more than 70 miles on the average--so the type of ride you're considering would be roughly 3 days.  Might be possible to do it in 2, but I wouldn't recommend pushing it like that.

    Best of luck!

  2. how many miles are you riding per week now?  and are you doing many 100+ mile days currently?

i have friends building up for the Highway 212 gut check race (412miles in 48hours) this august.  To get their bodies ready they've been steadily increasing their miles and, each month, going out for a looooong weekend (200-300miles, steadily increasing).  If you need to build up to 230miles (in 2 or 3 days) you need to work your body up to that by doing 100miles this weekend, 120 next weekend, 140 the weekend after, etc.  Get your body ready for 2 long back to back exertions.

You can totally do it, but you should dedicate nearly every weekend to 2 long rides (sat and sun).  In the middle of the week somewhere (tues/thurs would work) go out and do intervals to increase your power and speed.

oh, and get some hills in :)

  3. around 15 if it was straight there

sleep alot when u get there, a massage would be nice, take your time at the stops, make sure u stay hydrated, use proper gearing, pace yourself

  4. Have you got the legs for that? d**n.... I pulled in a 157mile ride in 9 hours and 56 minutes (kinda hilly terrain). Soooo probably around 16 hours of riding.......

Take two days and get a lift back... my best advice since you are going to be wiped out when you get there: sleep well, sleep lots get a light massage and eat a lot the week before you leave....

  5. That's a pretty open ended question. I know riders (who do the Boston-Montreal-Boston ride or the PAC Tour) who could do it in one long day (averaging 20 mph), but loaded touring for most riders is best limited to 60-75 miles/day ... so I would guess you should allow 3 days minimum. Of course your motivation, fitness level, wind conditions, choice of route (e.g. terrain options), bicycle and luck will all play a big part.
