I am looking on going on a LONG vacation so I am wondering how long it would take to travel from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to Tokyo by boat? How expensive would this trip be? I thought it out and its possible. The route would be down the Ohio River turn at the Mississippi down the Gulf of Mexico through the Panama Canal cross the Pacific Ocean and end at the Sea of Japan.

  1. I assume you are planning on taking the trip via a personal boat, not a cruise ship, given your route.

I can imagine that you would need a particularly study, seaworthy boat of a fairly decent size if you plan to cross the Pacific.

Not sure how long it would take, but I hope if you take the trip, you enjoy it!

Nice to see a fellow Pittsburgher on here!

  2. I would imagine that a trip like the one you are listing would take six weeks without stops.  However, I know of no commercial ship that runs on this particular route.

  3. Zef's right - there's no commercial route like that.  You'd definitely need to charter or buy (and potentially resell) your own boat.

And then speed and cost would depend on whether you're in a sailboat or a yacht...  I'm sure you could take six months to do it if you wanted.

Sounds like a fabulous trip.  My husband and I have occasionally thought about taking a sailboat through the Panama Canal, but crossing the Pacific in a boat is too ambitious for us.
