  1. The term sonic boom is commonly used to refer to the shocks caused by the supersonic flight of an aircraft. Sonic booms generate enormous amounts of sound energy, sounding a lot like an explosion. Thunder is a type of natural sonic boom, created by the rapid heating and expansion of air in a lightning discharge.

    And so on...

  2. I was a kid when jets were still allowed to break the sound barrier over land. The boom was incredibly loud.

    Check out this video:

The boom was a lot louder than what you hear on the video, which is why the FAA banned over-land supersonic flight in 1968.

  3. it depends on how much air was accelerated, as an aircraft accelerates, the boom wouldnt get any louder, only when the size of the aircraft changes that the amount of air displaced is increased and the resulting boom is louder

  4. The sonic booms I've heard all sounded like a brief clap of thunder, and not as loud as when thunder is happening right over your house.  If you're standing on the ground a sonic boom won't make you deaf any more than thunder will.
