  1. most company's work 3 12 hour shifts then it is 3 days off

  2. Monetarily as many as your body and mind can take, legally 4 in a straight row (i think, not totally sure)  now heres what you have to consider, can you hack it? is your boss going to pay double time or at least time and a half after 8 hours? and when does your shift start and end?  by rights where all things are equal your first shift should be a Sunday night at 9 finishing at 9am with at least 3 breaks meaning your last shift should be at 12 am Thursday night finishing at 12 pm Friday morning.  If your boss wants 12 hour shifts on the day shift he's taking the p**s!  start at 8 am finish at 8pm right through till Friday you'll be in the hospital or dead within a year.  Weigh it up make sure the legalities are right, personally if it were me I'd find a new job.  I'm known as "The machine" in work, i've pulled a  28 hour shift and it nearly killed me.  Thats a 12am start finish at 12 pm, then back in to cover for the mid shift 2pm 10 pm then back again for my own shift 12 am till 8 am.  28 hours with 4 hours rest off the clock! all i'm saying is make sure your paid for it or else tell you boss to shove his job up his ars'e.  Your no good to your partner or kids if your a zombie!

  3. Most I have worked is 4 in a row. Depending on the shift pattern sometimes you can only have 2 days off before you start again on a 3 in a row. We do end up eventually with decent time off, just takes time lol !

  4. None.  They are illegal under the european working time directive.

  5. You have to have at least 8-12 hours off in between shifts and normally places where you work 12 hour shifts will have a schedule where you work like three days then be off for four, or something similar.

You can only work 40 hours a week before you go into overtime and a lot of employers try to avoid it.

It also depends on if your workplace has a union, because the union sets up rules for this type of thing.

  6. It depends if you're a minor or not, and there may be state laws and/or union rules that affect this. But generally, as long as your employer pays overtime for over 40 hours per week, the length of the shift can be 12 hours. You may be entitled to additional paid break time per shift.

  7. laws vary state to state and it depends on if your boss intends to pay overtime if there is no intention to pay over time most likely the answer is 3

  8. |By law, you can't work 48 hours in a row, so if he starts 12 hour shifts, you;d only be able to work 4 days straight. I think by law, the time off after that would have to be at least two days.

With 12 hour shifts, you should also get at least two 1 hour breaks during the day.

  9. A lot....my dad works twelve hour shifts....he can have about a week of night shifts then a day or two 'holiday' then another week of day shifts.

  10. UK ?

The European Working Time Directive applies, where you are entitled to 12 hours between shifts ending and starting, and you should work no more than 48 hours a week, but this is averaged over a 13 week period, so if you do go over now and then it is not an issue.

You can opt out of the WTD regulations if you wish, your employer will have an opt out form.

As for overtime, that depends on your contract, if you are entitled to it at all, and when it takes effect will all be in your contract.

If your boss wants to make a fundamental change like this they have to give you notice of the change in writing too.
