The main targets were aircraft carriers (CV, CVL, CVE) but because they were usually heavily screened by other ships and fighters for protection, the kamikazes hit the nearest / easiest ships they could get to.  Destroyers (DD, DE) took the brunt of the hits since they were usually on the outermost ring of fleet defense.
