Question:

How many Amps can one electrical socket handle?

I have a lot of electronics in my bedroom. They are all in different outlets, all on a 15amp breaker. Granted I'm not going to plug everything into one outlet, I was just curious how many amps one socket can handle before the breaker would trip. My father in law was yelling at me about plugging something into an outlet, that already has a window AC plugged into it. I really don't think it matters considering the AC pulls 5.6 amps and the heating pad i was going to plug in pulls only 0.45 amps

  1. depends on if it is 20 amp or 15 etc..

  2. Well it depends upon the thickness and quality of the wiring and pockets in your home... I think you can handle all 15amps current in a single socket...

  3. You would be fine. Any receptacle can handle the full branch circuit load. You have to watch out not to overload the circuit though or your breaker will trip. That receptacle can handle at least 15 amps.

  4. Lots?

  5. The current is limited by the 15 amp circuit breaker. Since the circuit breaker is 15 amps, let's assume, per the electrical codes, the conduit in the walls is sufficient (number 12 or number 14 copper), and the outlet itself is rated for at least 15 amps. The total for all you outlets must not exceed 15 amps. You may draw up to 15 amps from one outlet as long as the others are not drawing any.
