  1. If you have valid business reasons, you can have one for each business.


  2. Your question is very vague.

    You don't need an EIN for a sole proprietorship unless it has payroll. Then you get one EIN for all business run that way.

    If you have several S- Corps, then you need a separate EIN for each one. The same is true for partnerships.

  3. as many businesses as you have. And since EIN's are 9 digits you can have up to 1 billion EIN's less those EIN's already issued.

  4. Answer above is wrong.  A taxpayer can have only one federal Employer ID Number.  It identifies the taxpayer not the business.  You can have several different businesses and types of business but you are still you.  If you have multiple corporations, each of them is a separate taxpayer.

    State rules are different.  For unemployment tax purposes, each business has a different number because different business will have different unemployment tax rates based on their claims experience.
