  1. fourty-two

  2. you'll be fine. most people there speak english just as well as french/.   However if you want the best/nicest service, make some attempt at french (no matter how pathetic of an attempt it is)  They just appreciate the fact that you resepct their heritage enough to try.  "Parlez vous anglais?" best way to make the attempt and it means "do you speak english?"

  3. Montreal has NOT become mostly english. It depends where you travel on the Island.  I live in the "West-Island", and it's over here that the majority of english speaking montrealers live. However if you go Downtown, it's pretty much all french. But there are lots of english tourist and the most montrealers know at least some english. Actually Montreal is the city with the most bilingual people in North America.

  4. English people? Like people from England? Or English SPEAKING people?

I am sure a lot of people speak English in Quebec. I am not sure if there are too many people from England, though.

  5. Montreal has now become mainly English-speaking so you won't have any problems there. There are a lot of people in Montreal who can't even speak French, so no worries, you'll feel perfectly at home!

And to answer your question: There are roughly one million Anglo-Quebecers, mostly in the Greater Montreal Area.

jaccar1990: Have you even ever lived in Montreal? Downtown Montreal is totally more English than French, especially around McGill (the so-called McGill Ghetto). The last government study showed the use of English had now surpassed the use of French ON the Island of Montreal and the use of French had decreased AROUND the Island of Montreal, check your facts. Most French-speaking business people in Montreal will tell you they have to work in English more than in French. Stop fooling yourself.

Ever heard of Deux-Montagnes (Two Mountains)? That is north of Montreal, not even close to the city, I can find you some people there who can't even speak French.

  6. Only about 30% of the people in Greater Montreal have Englsih as their first language but don't worry, almost everyone is bi-lingual.  In fact, because Montreal is a great, international, cosmopolitan city with lots of immigrants many people speak 3 and 4 languages.

Montreal is a wonderful North American city for vacationing!!  Lots and lots and lots to do and fantastic restaurants (for the most part - do not expect any decent American-style BBQ and most oriental restaurants tnd to sweeten dishes too much to accommodate the Quebecois taste unless you demand "gout authentique, s'il vous plait!  Pas a la gout quebecois!).

Make sure you try the famous Montreal smoked meat sandwich -- most Montrealers will tell you Swartz's or Dunn's are the best but I favour The New System, which is across rue Notre Dame from Atwater Public Market.  I just had a friend in from Paris and she just loved it.)
