How many Grade 1 racecourses are their in the world? What makes a grade 1 racecourse?

There is no such thing as a Grade 1 racecourse, it is the races themselves that are Graded.

It is possible that someone has reffered to a racecourse as "Grade 1" because that particular course stages one or more Grade 1 races (these races are known as GROUP 1 races in Europe, but are the same thing).

A race is awarded Grade/Group status by the International Pattern Committee.  A race has to have been run for several years before it can be considered for Grade/Group status.  The committee will look at the quality of runners in the race over the years and what those runners have gone on to acheive.  Races can also be down-graded if the committee feel that the quality of the race has fallen over a number of years.

There are many Grade/Group 1 races staged around the world, too many to list!  Some of them are: The Derby, The Oaks, The Irish Derby, The Irish Oaks, Prix du Jockey Club (French Derby), Prix de Diane (French Oaks), Kentucky Derby, Arlington Million, The King George, Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, The Japan Cup, The Dubai World Cup and the 8 established Breeders' Cup races (Classic, Turf, Mile, Sprint F&M Turf, Juvenile, Juvenile Fillies, Distaff).

If there's a better racetrack than Santa Anita, I'd love to see it.  No, I've never been to Churchill Downs, but I'm sure it's just as nice.

I never heard of racecourses being graded.
