      Heavy rain and rising, record floodwaters swamped tri-state cities and roads Thursday as severe storms lashed the area.

    As river levels rose, widespread severe storms triggered flash flooding from Dyersville, Iowa, to Potosi, Wis. A severe thunderstorm pelted Farley, Iowa, with golf ball-sized hail Thursday afternoon. Other storms triggered tornado touchdowns in Grant County.

    Grant County was under a state of emergency after severe storms lashed parts of southwest Wisconsin Thursday afternoon. Potosi, Lancaster and Livingston bore the brunt of the storms. At least two tornado touchdowns were reported in Grant County. A small, very short-lived funnel cloud was sighted in the Platteville area. The other tornado was spotted near Livingston with no report of damage or injuries.

    A voluntary evacuation was implemented for part of Dyersville on Thursday afternoon as officials monitored rising tributary waters.

    Residents on Third Avenue between First and Fifth streets SW were asked to consider seeking shelter elsewhere.

    in the second deluge of its kind in less than 10 months in the small Crawford County community known for its apple orchards. Last August, a flash flood devastated the town. This week's flooding is a painful reminder of what the river can do. Repairs to many homes and businesses were nearly finished when the latest round of flooding hit.

    Elkader officials called a meeting of area flood victims for a second time Thursday night with updated information for those trying to dry out and demuck.

    About 30 businesses and between 55 and 60 homes had been damaged, officials said.

    I live in Platteville and I had no place to go.  Several roads out of town were closed due to the flood waters.

    As for Eastern Iowa, I heard a report on www.kwwl.com this morning that said "out of the 99 counties in Iowa, 83 of them are flooded."


  2. Levee breach in Des Moines

    In the state capital of Des Moines, a levee breach Saturday morning inundated a neighborhood of more than 200 homes, a high school and about three dozen businesses. City crews and National Guard units struggled to build a temporary berm in a bid to stop the water, but by midmorning the water had cut through their mounds of dirt and sandbags.

    Another levee break along the Iowa River in the southeastern corner of the state swamped tiny Oakville, population 439. Also in southeast Iowa, authorities told all the roughly 250 people in Fredonia to leave their homes and ordered more evacuations in two other small towns, Columbus Junction and Columbus City — all clustered near the junction of the Iowa and Cedar rivers.

    In Oklahoma, which recorded a gust of 82 mph and rainfall of 11 inches, about 300 homes and businesses were damaged in the Kingfisher area and in Caddo County in southwestern Oklahoma.
