  1. 11 hours, but I had been riding a scooter for 12 months beforehand, having passed my test on that 5 months before my car test.

My first 5 lessons cost me £4.19.6d

The driving test didn't cost much either.

As stated, passing the test is only the start and I have been learning ever since (39 years).

I also taught myself how to maintain my car(s).  There wasn't sites like this to ask the simplest of questions on, and it is only now, having new cars that I use the main dealers for maintenance as the cars are under warranty.

  2. In the UK?

The companies like BSM etc will try to tell you about 50 hours. Ignore them.

In the 1960s and 70s they used to reckon 10-15 hours for an average learner.

Now the companies are getting greedy and trying to sell more and more lessons.

Try to find someone who is a member of the Institute of Advanced Motorists and they will get you through in about 12 hours.

I know I will get loads of thumbs down from irate instructors but I don't care.

  3. 3 i could have got away with one or two but i wanted to make sure..

  4. about a dozen - a long time ago

Now it is recommended that get 120 hours of practice - with folks etc

  5. about 40 or 50

  6. I had about 25 lessons back in '97 and I had practice in my mum's car.

lol at dunrobin's comments on "greedy" and "irate" driving instructors - what a load of b*llocks!

please note - It's not companies like BSM that are saying you need 50 lessons - it's the Driving Standards Agency that imply that the average pupil who passes has had 45 hours with an instructor and 22 hours private practice. http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/Lea...

So what does the D.S.A. get out of this? Are they greedy too?!

I'm not irate, and I'm not going to stoop as low as to give you a "thumb down" but you really should get your facts right before airing your misinformed opinions :)

  7. Well i passed my test in 1998 having booked 12 lessons but luckily only used 10, the other 2 I used on motorway practice afterwards, Im now teaching my partner how to drive, however i've always been told you learn to pass your test and then when succesful thats when you learn to drive, my advice is get someone to show you how a car works ie the gears, stopping and starting and the very basics, then when confident take lessons with a teacher, this will save you money on your 1st few lessons but having a teacher will also stop you getting into bad habits early on. Good Luck.

  8. only the one before the test....i drove for a while before hand.

  9. I did way too many... like 20! Plus my dad was teaching me too. But I didn't know how to drive at all before I started. If you've been driving already for a few years probably 2-3 lessons will do, just to know what are the stupid little things that make you fail.
