How many M16 magazines(30 round) does a soldier carry?

I always carried 7 except during Airborne Ops. Then 10 because you never knew for sure when first re-supply would be. A basic combat load has varied from 210 to 270 over the years, depending on the unit and the units mission.

6 mags on and one in is standard, but as long as you can carry it, and your chain of command isn't too anal, you can carry how ever many more that makes you happy.

Most people have a preference but there are mission specific requirements as well.

Combat load is seven 30-round magazines (210 rounds total).

as many as you are issued.  My buddy went to iraq in 03 and the only gave him 3 magazines.
