  3. None. Only one chimp flew a Mercury Redstone, and that was Ham. He survived, though he was not happy about the flight after a malfunction caused his capsule to be pulled away by the escape rocket, subjecting him to far higher G forces than the planned flight.

    It was this malfunction, incidentally, that led to Shepard missing out on the title of first man in space. Because the Redstone group under Wernher von Braun wanted another test to avoid that malfunction, Shepard's flight was slipped from March 1961 to May 1961. Gagarin went up in April.
